What meat eater doesn’t love bacon? I know I love it! Nothing smells so good on a cold winter morning than some maple bacon cooking. My husband strangely enough won’t eat bacon even though he loves pork. lol. There is a long story involving a pet pig named Squeeler and a surprise bacon breakfast when he was about 4 or 5 that explains why, lol but I won’t get into all of that right now. I found some interesting articles and items I’d like to tell you about that all have one thing in common… BACON!
Last year we were in a specialty grocery store in Bloomington, IN and we came across Vosges Mo’s Dark Chocolate Bacon Bars. We really loved it and decided to give out friends their own bacon chocolate bars for Christmas (along with a Well’s Banana Bread Beer). It seemed to be a hit. I’d love to try it in milk chocolate! Vosges also offers a few other interesting bacony products like bacon chocolate chip pancake mix, bacon caramel toffee and the flying pig made of bacon chocolate.
Craft Magazine just posted an article on their blog from the A Good Appetite blog with a recipe for Maple Bacon Ice Cream! I belt it tastes good once you get over the initial repulsion of cold meat and milk. lol. I don’t think I’d mind it as long as it didn’t have chunks of cold fat in it. Either way, It’s a very interesting idea. Also via Craft is this article from Instructables on how to make little cups out of bacon (they call them Bacon Fruit Cups) to use in making hors d’oeuvres. They suggest using them with fruit as I said, but just imagine the possibilities! You could fill them with herbed cream cheeses, veggie mixes, cheeses or even a mushroom bruschetta! YUM! I remember my father doing bacon wrapped water chestnuts and bacon wrapped dates for parties, but these little cups are so much cuter!
OH! You are so bad! Salty, sweet, and crunchy–yum! Oh and smokey too. When I was a kid I loved to eat vanilla ice cream with Fritos on the side. I wonder if I can get that beer by mail order? One more thing, have you tried sweet potato pancake mix? It has pecans in it and is really good–yes, with bacon on the side
You might be able to get it mail order I saw a couple results pop up for it on google shopping when I was finding the webpage for the company. We ended up looking for it all over the country and finally found it. We were traveling at the time we heard about it so just kept stopping in places and asking about it. Most states didn’t even have it at that time, I have seen it a lot more so I guess it’s in fairly wide distribution now. I don’t like beer but that one at least smells great! LOL. I haven’t tried those pancakes, I’ll have to look for them though, my husband loves sweet potatoes!
I’ll try and remember to pick up a bag of pancake mix for you when I go shopping and send it your way.
