New on Kerrfect

Or at least a home inspired by one of her many homes. LOL. I was looking for a photo of Martha’s home in Bedford Hills, NY when I came across a place called KB Homes who feature Martha Stewart Communities filled with Martha Stewart brand homes! I love Martha and I guess now she really DOES have her hands in everything. There are probably 35 different house plans available in 4 categories inspired by one of her own four homes (the house in Bedford was not one of them). You then have 5 choices of locations in CA, NC, FL or CO  where you can have the home built. Honestly I do have to say I think she would have done much better had she teamed up with a company that sells the blueprints instead of a developer, then people all over could have a Martha Stewart home… instead of being confined to one of 5 cities. I know I would look to her designs first if I was building a home, before I would go to a brand I wasn’t sure of.

The exteriors are lovely, definitely a step or two up from your usual new construction sub division cookie cutters. I’ve never understood why people pay half a million dollars for a home that is just like the one across the street and next door only it’s half a shade darker tan. LOL. Boggles my mind. You all know I don’t like new construction anyway. On the inside they always look cheap to me. The only thing about the Martha homes I didn’t like was that when I looked at the virtual tour I noticed the tell-tale signs of new construction that always bother me. The kitchen/living room/dining room combos. Who wants to invite people over for dinner so that they can stare into your (now) messy from cooking kitchen? We’ve always had the combo rooms since my father and I moved to FL. That’s one reason Trab & I loved OUR house so much, formal living room and formal dining room both shut off from the kitchen and each other. Another thing I noticed that I can’t stand are the corners. anywhere a wall ends and it’s not properly trimmed out. My ex-husband’s parents’ house was cheap like this… after a few years the thin layer of plaster had chipped off the metal flashing on all of the corners and other places where there should have been trim work and it looked horrible. The Martha homes in the virtual tours had these type corners, etc. The homes in the PHOTOS don’t; they have beautiful trim work and detailing.

All-in-all I DO like the Martha homes, the color palettes are great and of course the homes have all her charm to them. Try to think of it as where Martha would live if she had to live in your local golf course sub division. lol

What meat eater doesn’t love bacon? I know I love it! Nothing smells so good on a cold winter morning than some maple bacon cooking. My husband strangely enough won’t eat bacon even though he loves pork. lol. There is a long story  involving a pet pig named Squeeler and a surprise bacon breakfast when he was about 4 or 5 that explains why, lol but I won’t get into all of that right now. I found some interesting articles and items I’d like to tell you about that all have one thing in common… BACON!

Last year we were in a specialty grocery store in Bloomington, IN and we came across Vosges Mo’s Dark Chocolate Bacon Bars. We really loved it and decided to give out friends their own bacon chocolate bars for Christmas (along with a Well’s Banana Bread Beer). It seemed to be a hit. I’d love to try it in milk chocolate! Vosges also offers a few other interesting bacony products like bacon chocolate chip pancake mix, bacon caramel toffee and the flying pig made of bacon chocolate.

Craft Magazine just posted an article on their blog from the A Good Appetite blog with a recipe for Maple Bacon Ice Cream! I belt it tastes good once you get over the initial repulsion of cold meat and milk. lol. I don’t think I’d mind it as long as it didn’t have chunks of cold fat in it. Either way, It’s a very interesting idea.  Also via Craft is this article from Instructables on how to make little cups out of bacon (they call them Bacon Fruit Cups) to use in making hors d’oeuvres. They suggest using them with fruit as I said, but just imagine the possibilities! You could fill them with herbed cream cheeses, veggie mixes, cheeses or even a mushroom bruschetta! YUM! I remember my father doing bacon wrapped water chestnuts and bacon wrapped dates for parties, but these little cups are so much cuter!

I actually think I remember where this is! That is the Chautauqua Belle steamer that still travels the lake.

.

As some of you may know, I was raised in beautiful Chautauqua County in Western New York. Everything there is so pretty and historic. I really do miss it, especially in the winter and fall. I always surf the net and look for old images of the area, but never know what to do with them other than to click through them and make myself homesick every couple of months. I thought I might post some of them on the blog every once in a while and share a little part of my history with you.

It’s the height of summer and as usual I am very restless. The weather is good enough to get out and about, tons of festivals and special events are going on all over the country. Also, as usual hubby’s work schedule is screwing up any fun *I* might have had this season. I have wanted so badly to go to the World’s Longest Yard Sale for the past 3 years; the ONE weekend in August that my husband HAS to work is the same weekend as the sale. SURPRISE! SURPRISE! I haven’t been doing much of anything so far this summer other than hitting the local yard sales. It’s SO hot here! I didn’t think it would be anywhere near this hot in Wisconsin. I remember summers in New York and they weren’t anything like this. I’ve been mostly trying to find things to work on inside the house like some sewing here and there or running outside just for a minute or two to stripe and paint things. I’ve decided that I want to try selling my wares at a market of some sort. I’m not sure where or when I’ll start, but I’ve found some really cool larger items to upcycle that I think other might be interested in purchasing. I also find so many cool breakable items that I’m afraid to sell online because of them needing to be shipped. Even when professionally packed I seem to always have items that I ship get broken and people want their money back. It did seem to stop when I asked for a photo of the broken items before I would refund the money. LOL.

Speaking of selling items, I have changed all of my shop info for Etsy, the name and the address. It is now Bel et Vieux. I wanted something pretty and cool that would describe what I sell in general without being so specific that it would be limiting. It’s taken me years to come up with a name that I coule REALLY be excited about like I am this one. Bel et Vieux is french for Beautiful & Old. I sell beautiful things and old things in many forms and I like the whole French flea market style thing. It’s fitting and looks great on tags! My father has been her for almost 2 weeks so I wasn’t really able to get around to getting the shop ready visually. I havn’t updated the blog, worked on projects, taken any photos, read any books, watched any movies or gotten the graphics for my new Etsy done yet. Hopefully I can change all that in the very near future… It’s not like I’ll be going to the World’s Largest yard sale or anything!

Happy 4th of July!

I hope everyone is having a beautiful day!
In honor of our founding fathers I am posting 2 recently released commercials staring two of those fathers that I find to be absolutely hilarious!
Enjoy!

The look on his face is priceless!

My Pattern Collection

The last couple days I’ve been working on scanning in the envelopes for all of my patterns and logging all of the info on them as well. I started out scanning them in so that I could make a printed guide for myself to use when I wanted to make something new. Digging through manila [...]

Blackwatch Baby & Delft Darling Dresses

Neither one of thee are spectacular or overwhelmingly complicated so I’m grouping them into one post.
This dress is actually a much darker, richer green, but for some reason it came outalmost like a teal in the photos. It’s about an 18/24 month size and made of good old-fashioned velvet. I bought the dress at a [...]

Spring Fling Pillowcase Dress

I completely hand stitched this dress in a Residence Inn we stayed at in Memphis. I was bored and had brought some sewing supplies with me so I figured why not!? It’s made from a 50 cent pillow case, about 10 cents worth of vintage lace from a thrift store and some green remnant fabric [...]

Rosebud Pillowcase Dress

I made this dress from a pillow case I bought at a thrift store for 50 cents I think. The pillow case had a yellow cuff at one end and the main body was this white muslin with yellow rose buds. I used a vintage 70’s patterns for the main dress  shape, but I added [...]

Election Shoulder Bag

This bag took me about an hour and 1/2 to make. I used all but two tiny carrot shaped strips of the state fabric. I bought it at Jo Ann as a remnant for 70 cents I think. It was cut crooked so I had to level it up. It was so bright and interesting [...]

Yellow Rose Childs’ Dress

Here is another new dress I just put the finishing touches on this afternoon. This one too is made out of a vintage twin bed sheet I found in Memphis; it was $1.98. The vintage lace trim is also from a Memphis thrift store and cost about 30 cents. The buttons, chiffon for the sash, [...]

Lavender & Roses Little Girls’ Dress

This is my latest completed project. The muslin I used for the body of the dress was a vintage twin sheet that I bought at a thrift store in Memphis for $2.50. The lavender lace trim on the neckline, hem and covering the belt buckle was also bought at a Memphis thrift store and cost [...]
